What is mediation?
Mediation is a process in which the parties to a dispute, with the assistance of a neutral third party (the mediator), identify the issues, develop options, consider alternatives and endeavour to reach an agreement. The responsibility for the decisions made and the outcome of the resolution remain with the clients, with no advice or suggestions from the mediator.
The mediator retains control of the process and takes the parties back to a ‘formal relationship’, which differs greatly from counselling or therapy.
Families often find by being involved in a formal process, in a controlled, relaxing environment it helps to find a solution which is acceptable to all parties and good outcomes can be achieved.
Mediation is helpful for intensive parental issues but also teen/parent issues, adult relationship conflicts, disputes between neighbours, work colleagues, issues between adult sibling and generally any issue which left unresolved may result in a severe breakdown in a relationship or a court battle.
A certificate as required for the Family Law Court from an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDR) cannot be provided for this mediation service. To find a dispute resolution service provider visit www.familyrelationships.

Community Development and Advocacy
Community development is a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems.
Most of us belong to more than one community, for example, an individual can be part of a neighbourhood community, a religious community and a community of shared interests all at the same time.
This collective grass roots action is something Southern Downs Wellbeing Support Service is able to facilitate by being involved with small initatives within groups to large initatives that involved the broader community.
