Meet Kathy

Kathy Payne is well known across the Southern Downs for warm, positive and professional support services and the creative community projects she has delivered across a 25 year practice in various roles. 

Kathy graduated from Charles Sturt University with a BA in Social Welfare in 1992 and a Bachelor of Social Work in 2005.  

She has worked with children in care and their families, provided adoption counselling, worked within the disability, youth, education health and aged care sectors.  

Kathy has spent 10 years as a youth counsellor with Headspace and in general social work locum positions providing crisis intervention support, counselling, mental health support, community development, advocacy, mediation and supervision.

Kathy’s private practice is a combination of private sessions and NDIS services. Her experience has provided a solid background for working with children, adolescents, adults, people with disabilities and families.

Accredited Mental Health Social Worker

As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker registered with Medicare, focused psychological therapies are provided through the Commonwealth funded Better Access to Mental Health Care, enabling clients to claim a rebate from Medicare.

Therapy Tailored to Suit Your Needs

Therapy is tailored to suit the client and situation, often using a combination of strengths-based, non-directive, psychological focused strategies which are evidence-based therapeutic approaches approved for use by Medicare Australia.

Sessions are offered face to face, via tele-link or ‘walk n talk’.

Southern Downs Wellbeing Support operates within the private sector providing fee-for-service consultations.    

Eligible referred counselling clients are able to claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.  The rebate generally covers approximately 3/4 of the cost of the session.  Please enquire about payment on booking your appointment.  

NDIS Support – Rehability Australia

Kathy is a contractor with Rehability Australia servicing the Southern Downs providing a range of services including:

  • Specialist Support Coordination and Coordination of Supports (COS)
  • Specialist Support Coordination (Level 3)
  • Coordination of Supports (Level 2)
  • Identifying Suitable Housing Solutions

Emergency Service Counselling and Crisis Support

Counselling & Support for QAS & QFES members and family.

On the Southern Downs Kathy is the provider of counselling and crisis support for Vital – Qld Fire & Emergency Services Support Network (QFES) & QAS – Priority One Ambulance Service. 

QAS and QFES clients are given priority access to available appointments.

Professional Interests

Kathy’s areas of professional interest include support coordination, perinatal support, professional and clinical supervision, relationship counselling, family mediation, with a special interest in advocating within the disability sector and for  domestic violence & homelessness issues. 

Always endevouring to provide a positive and practical framework for her clients who struggle with mental health or social issues and wish to improve their general wellbeing and functioning.  Kathy values living and working in the Southern Downs community and is an active member of a number of grass roots organisations and groups.  

Kathy keenly participates in ongoing professional development and networking within the health and community sector, staying abreast of all relevant opportunities for improving therapy and assisting her clients.
